Big Meech earned this wealth while running The Black Mafia Family, an Amercian drug-trafficking organization that ultimately generated an estimated $270 million in illegal profits and had around 500 people as members. Big Meech was born as Demetrius Flenory in 1968 in Detroit, Michigan. Demetrius and his brother, Terry Flenory, or “Southwest T” started by selling $50 bags of cocaine in Detroit while in high school. In the late 1980s they founded The Black Mafia Family which dealt cocaine across the United States with hubs in Atlanta, Georgia and Los Angeles, California.
By 2000, Big Meech along with his brother had established a large organization overseeing multi-kilogram cocaine distribution sales in numerous U.S. states including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee
There was divide in between the brothers around 2003. Big Meech reportedly handled operations in Atlanta, while Southwest T was responsible for the L.A. branch of the organization. At their peak, the brothers were moving 2,500 kilos of cocaine every month in and out of Atlanta alone. The brothers had been involved in a major falling out and rarely spoke to one another.
The Black Mafia Family is alleged to have made more than $270 million profits.
In 2000, the brothers founded BMF Entertainment in an effort to legalise their business. Soon they were associated with many acts, including Young Jeezy. Other BMF artists have included Bleu DaVinci, Calico Jonez, Nu Money, Baby D, Fee Money, and D-Boi.
Big Meech Arrest:
The Drug Enforcement Administration arrested the brothers in 2005. In 2007, the brothers pleaded guilty to running a continuing criminal enterprise. Both pleaded guilty for money laundering and drug trafficking and they each received a 30-year federal prison sentence in 2008.
Investigators seized $21 million worth of assets including cash, jewelry, more than 30 cars and 13 homes located in Detroit, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
In 2010 newspaper editor Mara Shalhoup wrote a book on the Black Mafia Family called “BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family”. Big Meech reportedly adopted the name Big Herm while in prison.
Big Meech Release:
The brothers were initially set for release in 2032. Terry Flenory was released to home confinement in 2020 as part of an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. Demetrius Flenory also sought his release under the same guidelines; but , a federal judge rejected the move as Demetrius prison record suggests he has not changed and continues to promote himself as a drug kingpin.
Demetrius Flenory is serving out his sentence at Federal Correctional Institution, Sheridan and is will be release on May 5, 2029, around his 64th birthday.
