Kartiki Gonsalves was born on November 2, 1986, to Timothy A. Gonsalves, a professor and computer scientist, and Priscilla Tapley Gonsalves. She was raised with her younger sister Danica in Ooty, located in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.
After completing her secondary education, she attended Dr G R Damodaran College of Science in Coimbatore and earned her degree in 2007. Following her graduation, she pursued her interest in photography and continued her studies in that field.
