Raised by South Korean immigrants parents, Ken soon moved with his family to North Carolina where he spent most of his youth. Ken participated in the Quiz Bowl in his school days and played the violin in the school orchestra. Ken was on the student council.

Ken Jeong started acting while attending Duke University. Ken attended drama classes while pursuing a pre-med major and avoided the temptation to become a drama major.

Though Ken took theater classes after graduating from Duke in 1991, he went on to obtain his M.D. at the UNC School of Medicine in 1995.

While Ken was still doing his M.D., Jeong started attending open mics and improved his comeic skills. Ken’s medical career was always a priority, and he completed his residency in New Orleans. Ken career finally catapulted after winning the Big Easy Laff-Off in 1995, and NBC president Brandon Tartikoff onvinced Jeong to move to Los Angeles.
