Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in March 1965. His father, Nasser, worked as a diplomat for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul while his mother worked as a Persian language teacher at a girls’ high school; both originate from Herat.

When Hosseini was 15, his family applied for asylum in the United States, where Khaled later became a naturalized citizen.


After graduating from college, Hosseini worked as a physician in California.The success of The Kite Runner meant Khaled Hosseini was able to retire from medicine in order to write full-time. Khaled Hosseini three novels have all reached commercial success and critical acclaim.

Hosseini did not return to Afghanistan until 2003, when he was 38, an experience like that of the protagonist in The Kite Runner. In later interviews, Hosseini admitted to feeling survivor’s guilt for having been able to leave the country prior to the Soviet invasion and subsequent wars.

Hosseini worked as a doctor in California after graduating college. Khaled Hosseini published his first novel The Kite Runner in 2003 and then he retired from medicine to be a full time writer.

The Kite Runner was on The New York Times Best Seller list for 101 weeks and was #1 for four weeks. His second novel A Thousand Splendid Suns was released in 2007 and it spent 103 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list including 15 weeks at #1. Khaled Hosseini third novel And the Mountains Echoed was published in 2013 and was on The New York Times Best Seller list for 33 weeks.
