Franklin’s success was due to the skillful way in which he combined his theological language with urban rhythms to create a hip-hop-friendly modern Christian mix. “The lean goateed Franklin is able to score with hard gospel partly because he has the attributes other gospel performers lack: charm, sex appeal, stage presence, ambition, business knowledge, and street credibility,” John Morthland of Texas Monthly observed.
