In Dallas, Texas, in January 1970, Kirk Dewayne Franklin was born to parents who were both still in their teen years. He was reared by his aunt Gertrude after his mother abandoned him when he was three.
Kirk impressively obtained his first contract at the age of seven, but his aunt declined it. In an effort to keep Franklin out of trouble when he was a teenager and rebel against his strict religious upbringing, his grandmother set up an audition for him at a professional youth conservatory connected to a nearby university.
After being admitted, he had to deal with a girlfriend being pregnant and then being expelled from school due to misbehaviour. With regards to his education, Franklin went to Oscar Dean Wyatt High School, where he studied music under Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals.
When he was 15 years old, Franklin joined forces with other musicians to form the gospel group The Humble Hearts. Franklin went on to be chosen by gospel music icon Milton Biggham to conduct the choir at the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention.
Kirk Franklin Career:
Hip hop beats with explicitly religious lyrics are combined by gospel singer Kirk Franklin, who has achieved enormous crossover success in both Christian and pop music in America. “Song We Sing,” a rare crossover hit for Franklin and his backing band the Family, was released in 1993. Four years later, the song “Stomp,” which God’s Property recorded with them, eclipsed this quite spectacular achievement by using a sample from “One Nation Under a Groove.”
“Stomp” shot to the top of the charts and became the first Christian song to get a heavily played MTV video (Music Television). Franklin’s success was due to the skillful way in which he combined his theological language with urban rhythms to create a hip-hop-friendly modern Christian mix. “The lean goateed Franklin is able to score with hard gospel partly because he has the attributes other gospel performers lack: charm, sex appeal, stage presence, ambition, business knowledge, and street credibility,” John Morthland of Texas Monthly observed.
The return of BET’s gospel music reality singing competition Sunday Best after a four-year break was announced in February 2019. The host will once again be Franklin. Franklin claimed that his victory speech was changed to exclude references to the police officer who killed Atatiana Jefferson after the 2019 GMA Dove Awards were broadcast on Trinity Broadcasting Network on October 20, 2019.

Other artists joined Franklin in his boycott.
