Erdogan was then part of the Virtue Party but after it was banned, Erdoğan along with Abdullah Gül started the Justice and Development Party (AKP). The AKP was successful and won 34% of the votes for the general election in 2002 and this made Erdoğan the Prime Minister of Turkey in 2003 to 2014.

During this time, Erdogan served as Prime Minister for three terms and was not allowed to run for the fourth time and hence why he decided to run for presidency in 2014.

Erdogan became the first President of Turkey to be directly elected instead of just by the parliament. Since the start, Erdogan had plans to expand his presidency however there were many downs the Erdoğan government had to face.

On the fateful night of 15th July 2016, a violent coup was staged to accuse Erdoğan and the AKP for undermining democracy and damaging the rule of law in Turkey. The coup was however overcome by the army and ended the violence there.

Using this, Erdogan gained his presidency for the second term from 2017 onwards. Erdoğan has built bridges with several countries and has a consistent relationship with numerous countries and is negotiating its accession to the European Union (EU) as a member state.
