NeYo Career:

While in the Las Vegas Academy, Smith adopted the stage name GoGo and joined an R&B group called Envy, who appeared during amateur night on Showtime at the Apollo and on the short lived MTV series The Cut (hosted by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC).

The group was quite successful and appeared on TV several times. After one particularly notable appearance on MTV, the Envy broke up in the year 2000.

The group disbanded in 2000, and Smith continued to write songs for other artists before starting his solo career. The stage name Ne-Yo was coined by Big D Evans, a producer with whom Ne-Yo once worked, because Evans claimed that Ne-Yo sees music like the character Neo sees the Matrix.

Upon graduating, Smith focused on songwriting. He soon became well-known in the music industry for his songwriting skills, and he earned the name “Ne-Yo” because he “sees songwriting like Neo sees the matrix.”

For the next two years, Ne-Yo continued writing songs, some of which have not been officially released. He contributed songs to American singer Teedra Moses’s 2004 album Complex Simplicity, Christina Milian’s It’s About Time, and the American boy band Youngstown, none of which, however, brought Ne-Yo much mainstream attention.

Ne-Yo has also contributed songs to singers Mary J. Blige, B2K, Faith Evans, and Musiq, among others.

NeYo Songwriting Phase:

Columbia initially signed Ne-Yo but soon dropped him. By 2003, Ne-Yo already had all the songs he needed for his debut album recorded and ready to go. His big break came when singer Marques Houston heard the lead single “That Girl” and helped Ne-Yo re-record the track. “That Girl” then featured on Houston’s debut album, MH. After people learned that Ne-Yo wrote the song, he was recognized as one of the industry’s best songwriters.

Suddenly, a wide range of musicians wanted to work with Ne-Yo. During the next couple of years, Ne-Yo worked with prominent artists such as Teedra Moses, Christina Milan, Youngstown, B2K, Faith Evans, and many others.

Ne-Yo’s most important songwriting gig came in 2004 when he wrote “Let Me Love You” for Mario. The song became a number-one hit, cementing Ne-Yo as one of the most sought-after songwriters in the industry. The success of the song prompted Jay-Z to sign Ne-Yo to a new deal after watching him perform.

Ne-Yo has also written songs for Mary J. Blige, JB, Beyoncé, Monica, Alexandra Burke, Cheryl Cole and Willow Smith’s upcoming albums. Ne-Yo starred in two motion pictures, the long-gestating George Lucas project Red Tails, released in early 2012, and Battle: Los Angeles, which was released in the United States on March 11, 2011.

Ne-Yo has already finished writing songs for American singer and Roc Nation artist Alexis Jordan and her self-titled debut album as well as Jennifer Hudson for her second studio album, I Remember Me, which had a North American release on March 22, 2011. Ne-Yo appeared in the children’s preschool show The Fresh Beat Band and was one of the few artists not to cancel appearances in the wake of the 2011 Japan earthquake.

In 2008, Ne-Yo released his third album, Year of the Gentleman. This album received positive reviews and went platinum once again thanks to hits like “Closer” and “Miss Independent.” After establishing himself as a successful solo artist, Ne-Yo released a greatest hits album in 2009. He spent the next few years touring and collaborating with artists such as Mariah Carey. In 2010, he released his next album, Libra Scale. Although the album received rave reviews, it failed to perform commercially.

He spent 2011 touring the UK before booking a major role 2011’s Battle: Los Angeles and another role in a George Lucas film called Red Tails in 2012. During this time, Ne-Yo continued to write songs for major artists such as Jennifer Hudson and Alexis Jordan. He also collaborated with artists such as Lil Wayne and Pitbull before moving from Def Jam to Motown.

His first album with Motown was R.E.D. The album was once again well-received by critics, and it performed fairly well commercially. From 2013 onwards, Ne-Yo collaborated with the likes of David Guetta and Akon. Juicy J helped Ne-Yo with the single “She Knows,” which later appeared on his 2015 album, Non-Fiction. The album proved to be popular and peaked at number five on the Billboard Top 200. In 2017, Ne-Yo announced the upcoming release of his seventh album and later debuted another single, “Another Love Song.” In 2017, he also appeared in the movie Girls Trip with a brief cameo.
