Quaid was born in Houston, Texas, the son of Juanita Bonniedale “Nita” (née Jordan), a real estate agent, and William Rudy Quaid, an electrician. Quaid has English, Scots-Irish, and Cajun ancestry.

His drama teacher sent him to an audition for the film The Last Picture Show when he was studying at the University of Houston. Randy Quaid booked the role and officially began his career as a film actor.
